Packing for a road trip with a toddler is basically an extreme sport. I always overpack (don’t we all?), but this time I wanted to share what I actually used, and what really saved my sanity in the car.
My MVP Organizer
-
Destination Holiday Medium Ribbed Bin With Lid
This pink bin from HEB was the real MVP. I tossed in books, toys, crayons, snacks(basically anything that would otherwise end up under the seat or melted into the upholster). Having a lid meant I could close it up and pretend I was organized.
Games & Activities That Worked
-
Matching Memory Game for Kids
Shockingly, this one held attention. Big enough pieces that I didn’t have to fish them out from between the seats. -
Interstate Bingo & Auto Bingo Game
Total nostalgia play. I loved car bingo as a kid, and now my son plays too. Kept us both entertained longer than I expected. -
Mom, I’m Bored Children’s Activity Book
When the whining started, I pulled this out. Crosswords, doodles, mazes, it was basically a quiet time lifesaver. -
Magnetic Road Trip Bingo
The magnetic version is genius, no pieces flying everywhere when we hit a bump.
Creative Distractions
-
OWLKELA Dry Erase Erasers
We paired these with little whiteboards for doodle sessions (the Mom I’m Bored Book) And because they’re magnetic, they didn’t vanish into the black hole of the car floor. -
Cityrosy Scratch Art Rainbow Paper
Mess free art that looks like magic? Yes, please. No crayons rolling around, no marker stains, just quiet scratching and surprise rainbows. -
Dinosaur Sticker Book
Stickers + dinosaurs = toddler jackpot. This one bought me a solid half hour of peace. -
Crayola Color Wonder Mess Free Coloring
These are my holy grail for car trips. The markers only work on the special paper, so there’s zero chance of graffiti on the seats.
Gadgets That Saved Me
-
Toddler Phone
A pretend phone with lights, songs, and games. My son felt like he had “a phone like mom” without me giving up my real one. -
My iPad
Look, I can pack a thousand activities, but I’m not a psycho I brought the iPad. I downloaded shows and games ahead of time, and when nothing else was working, it was the ultimate trump card. Sometimes survival > screen time.
Final Thoughts
Not everything I packed got used (half the snacks came back home with us, because of course), but these things actually worked. The bin kept me organized, the activities kept my toddler busy, and yes, the iPad kept me sane.
If you’re planning a road trip soon, I hope this list gives you a few ideas (or at least the permission slip you need to throw the iPad in your bag without guilt).
