f you’ve never heard of St. Nick’s Night on December 5, you’re in good company. A lot of us didn’t grow up with this tradition, but once you hear about it, it’s one of those sweet holiday moments you want to bring into your own home.
So- what exactly is St. Nick’s Night?
On the night of December 5, kids place their shoes by the door or fireplace before bed.
While they sleep, St. Nicholas (the real life inspiration behind Santa Claus) “visits” and leaves small treats.
Nothing big or fancy. Think
• chocolate coins
• an orange
• a small toy
• stickers
• a little note
• or even a candy cane
It’s simple, sweet, and a perfect way to start the holiday season with a little magic.
Why this tradition matters (especially for teaching generosity)
In a world where the holidays can easily turn into wish lists and Amazon carts, St. Nick’s Night brings us back to the heart of the season.
It teaches our kids
• generosity
• gratitude
• kindness
• and the joy of giving
St. Nicholas was known for quietly helping families in need, slipping gifts to children, and caring for his community without expecting anything in return. Bringing this tradition into your home gives you a chance to talk to your kids about
• giving without being seen
• blessing others in small ways
• and how even simple kindness can make someone’s day
Kids learn that generosity doesn’t have to be huge, it just has to be thoughtful.
How to make it your own
You can keep it simple or add your own spin
• Place shoes or slippers out before bed
• Read a short story about St. Nicholas
• Talk together about something kind your family can do for someone else
• Add small treats to the shoes after bedtime
That’s it. No pressure. No perfection. Just intentional family time and meaningful holiday magic.

My friend Brandi shares her family’s St. Nick’s Night tradition every year, and it is the cutest.
You can watch her full breakdown on my Instagram at @sanantoniomomsnetwork — she explains how they celebrate, what they put in the not shoes (but a basket), and the meaning behind it.
If you need inspo, she’s your girl.
Bring the magic home this year
